Tanzania Weather & Climate

How the seasons shape wildlife movement, landscapes, and the safari experience across Tanzania's parks.

Tanzania's Two Main Seasons

Tanzania sits just south of the equator, so temperatures stay warm year-round — what really changes is rainfall. Broadly, the country has a long dry season and two rainy periods, and each affects safari conditions differently.

JUN – OCT

Dry Season

The most popular time to visit. Skies are clear, rainfall is minimal, and vegetation thins out, making wildlife easier to spot as animals gather around rivers and waterholes. Days are warm and sunny; early mornings and evenings on the plains can be cool, especially in July and August.

NOV – DEC

Short Rains

Brief afternoon showers, usually followed by clear skies, refresh the landscape and bring lush green scenery. Parks are quieter, rates are often lower, and wildlife viewing remains good — this period also lines up with the start of the wildebeest migration heading into the southern Serengeti.

MAR – MAY

Long Rains

The wettest months, with heavier and more frequent rainfall, particularly in April. Some camps close during this period and roads can be harder to navigate, but it's a great time for birdwatching, fewer crowds, and the lowest safari rates of the year.

JAN – FEB

Short Dry Spell

A brief break between the short and long rains. This window is famous for the wildebeest calving season on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area, drawing large predator activity.

Climate Varies by Region

Tanzania's weather isn't uniform — altitude and location make a big difference from one safari destination to the next.

Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Tarangire, Lake Manyara)

Warm days averaging 25–30°C, with cooler nights. The vast Serengeti plains see the least rainfall of the northern parks, making them reliable year-round.

Ngorongoro Highlands

Sitting at over 2,200 meters, the crater rim is noticeably cooler than the surrounding lowlands — mornings can dip close to 10°C, so a warm layer is essential even in dry season.

Southern Circuit (Nyerere, Ruaha)

Hotter and drier overall than the north, with a more concentrated rainy season. The dry months bring dramatic wildlife concentrations along the Rufiji and Great Ruaha rivers.

Zanzibar & the Coast

Tropical and humid year-round, with temperatures around 27–32°C. The coast follows a similar rain pattern to the mainland, making it easy to combine with a safari before or after the long or short rains.

Planning tip: There's no single "best" time for every traveler — dry season suits first-time safari-goers who want easy sightings, while the rainy months reward those chasing lower rates, migration calving, or standout birdlife.
