Materuni Waterfalls, Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari
A fast-paced escape into three worlds: a rainforest hike to an 80-metre waterfall and Chagga coffee tradition, elephant herds beneath Tarangire's baobabs, and a descent into the Ngorongoro Crater in search of black rhino.
The Itinerary
Pick-up from Kilimanjaro Airport or your Arusha hotel starts the drive to Materuni village, at the foot of Kilimanjaro. After a village briefing on Chagga life and culture, a short rainforest walk opens onto the 80-metre Materuni Falls — bring swimwear for the pool below.
Back in the village, a hands-on coffee tour walks through growing, drying, roasting and grinding the bean, traditionally set to Chagga song.
A two-hour drive from Arusha brings you to Tarangire, named for the river that stays flowing through the dry season and draws the park's famous elephant families, giraffe, bushbuck and hartebeest — with lion and leopard following close behind.
The day is spent tracking wildlife among zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and the park's giant baobabs, with a boxed picnic lunch at a site inside the park.
After an early breakfast, the descent into the Ngorongoro Crater — a caldera with 600-metre walls and a 20-kilometre floor — feels like entering a self-contained world.
Inside, more than 500 bird species share the grassland with zebra, gazelle, wildebeest, hippo and flamingo, and this is your strongest chance of the trip to spot the endangered black rhino. The safari ends with a transfer back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport.
